Garments makeover: a fun way to great style

As encountered in the previous post, a fun and useful way to achieve an interesting and stylish look is swapping the purchase of unnecessary garments with making something new out of an article you already own and don’t use anymore.

In this post, I will show you some easy and quick makeovers I myself did to some garments. You can be inspired and do something similar, or go ahead and make something even more creative – it’s up to you!

To begin with, I’ll show you one of my most successful makeovers: the renovation of a jersey dress that I had never worn. This garment, I must admit it, was quite an unwise purchase, also due to the fact that I bought this summer dress in January, which made it impossible to realize not only that the color and print were not the most appropriate for summer, but also that the style was totally unflattering.

As you can see in the picture on the left (before makeover), the neckline style enlarges my bust and my whole figure, and the same did the small sleeves.

It was enough to cut a lower neckline and remove the sleeves to achieve a totally different outcome!

Sure, the color still remains not exactly “summer-like” and the print is not of the most flattering ones. Though, the lower neckline helps to slim the figure, decreasing the bust’s size and making my legs appear longer in contrast. My breast looks fuller and my waistline, in comparison, thinner. This also reduced the ugly effect of the not-so-flattering print.

Another totally effective change I did simply consisted of cutting the sleeves off of a T-shirt. As you can see in the picture on the left (before alteration), the unflattering outcome of this otherwise lovely linen T-shirt was mainly due to its sleeves, too large and short. This sleeve style enlarged my upper body, making my whole figure look more full-figured.

Removing the sleeves, I achieved a total transformation! This way, the design became totally flattering, slimming the silhouette and making me look taller. Surprisingly enough, this flattering effect can also be perceived under a blazer, as it improves the wearability of the T-shirt in the breast area as well.

Another alteration I frequently do consists of making small holes, tears, and rips to an old pair of jeans. Vintage, distressed jeans are totally fashionable nowadays. Though, I must admit that at the beginning I never wore them, as spending huge amount of money in a ripped garment looked totally nonsense to me.

However, as moderate use of rips and tears can undoubtedly have a flattering outcome, I decided to go for the DIY way.
I started with quite small holes, and the result was nice, as you can see in the picture below.

Of course, you are not supposed to use your best super-expensive pair of jeans for similar experiments as, in the beginning, the result can be far from perfection.

Though, you will shortly become a master in vintage art, which is a very fun thing!

Consider that small holes just above the knee can make your legs look longer and slimmer. Not only showing some skin is always useful for a flattering and slimming outcome, but the fact of positioning the hole a couple of inches above your knee would make your lower leg look longer, thus enhancing your whole figure.

Other possible transformations consist of making a scarf (or a fabric pochette) out of a pair of trousers, changing the line of a skirt, turning a pair of jeans (or Bermuda) into super sexy shorts, and so on. It’s entirely up to you!

So, what are you waiting for? Go and take a good pair of fabric scissors!

The style makeover is under the corner!
