How to wear ankle boots and get a visually slimmer silhouette

Continuing on the subject of ankle boots, in this post we will see the most flattering pairings to achieve a chic (and slimming!) outcome.

As encountered in the previous post, when wearing ankle boots it’s essential to pay attention to the proportions, and this is particularly true if your ankle boots stay in plain sight, because they can visually shorten your leg. Therefore, the garments you are wearing should be carefully picked out in order to obtain a chic and proportional outcome.

.

Firstly, consider that as for pairings with trousers, your pants must not be too wide, and they must be properly hemmed. A wide trouser that flutters at half-length is not only totally tasteless but also has a widening effect (as in the picture on the left). The pants must follow the leg line without being too wide or too tight.

.

If you love to pair ankle boots with skinny jeans, you may opt for booties with a narrow boot leg that ends just below the calf (as in the picture in the center).

Conversely, ankle boots with a wide boot leg tend to enlarge your lower body and are therefore only suitable for those with very thin legs.

If you’re quite short-statured (like I am), pairing wide ankle boots with skinny pants and a coat that come to the knee can easily wind up enlarging your figure. In this case, wearing knee-high boots can guarantee a more slimming and stylish outcome (picture on the right). Knee-high boots create a long, vertical line that adds length to the legs, thus elongating your whole figure.

Another slimming alternative is wearing your ankle boots under flared or boot-cut trousers, which always guarantee a faultless outcome no matter what your body shape (as long as your pants are properly hemmed: you’ll find the details in the next post). Furthermore, if you love wearing very high heels, flared pants allow you to hide the heels under the pant leg, thus assuring a proportional outcome.

.

Also, consider that when wearing ankle boots, it’s better to wear a monochromatic and quite close-fitting outfit. Ankle-boots have the effect of visually dividing your legs in two, making them look shorter, so it’s essential to balance them out with items that are not too wide and with matching colors.

It’s important that there is no chromatic contrast between boot and trousers, because, as you see in the picture on the left, a stark contrast makes the legs look shorter.  If you want to look thinner when wearing ankle boots, it’s better to give preference to a monochrome outfit (and if you like to play around with contrasts, opt for knee-high boots, that allow a more balanced outcome).

.

And if the whole outfit seems boring, you can always liven it up with a bright-colored bag or with a well-chosen scarf – a key accessory that, unexpectedly enough, can be used to achieve a visually slimmer silhouette.

Ankle boots with high, thin heels look great when combined with long, flared skirts, provided that the skirt is long enough to hide the upper part of the ankle boot. Conversely, avoid any combinations of a mid-length, straight skirt and wide ankle boots, which will end up shortening your figure (for more figure-flattering hints when wearing a skirt, check this post as well).

.

The essential thing, as usual, is achieving a look that is not a mere up-to-the-minute one (which will look dated in a few months and may not be the most flattering and stylish solution ever) but one that enhances your silhouette and is in tune with your style and mood.

If you follow your body shape and your style (instead of just following the latest trend), the result will be an outstanding one, and totally fashionable at the same time.

Plus, trust me, you will be unique in a very stylish way!
